Every now and then I need a departure from the typical genres I enjoy and The Book of Life certainly fits the bill.  Beginning with A Discovery of Witches I was drawn into Diana Bishop’s strength and her career as a historian.  The love interest that began in A Discovery of Witches with Matthew Clairmont, researcher and scientist extraordinaire was fleshed out in Shadow of Night.  Now in The Book of Life Matthew and Diana are back in the present at Sept-Tours, Matthew’s family compound and not all are happy to see them together.

A quick recommendation – read the last couple of chapter of Shadow of Night before jumping into The Book of Life.  There’s so many characters that having the refresher will help you know who’s who.  Another idea is to use the handy dandy Character Cheat Sheet.  I kept this pulled up on my smart phone for the first several chapters of The Book of Life til I got reacquainted.  It should also be noted that reading books 1 and 2 are necessary prior to reading  The Book of Life.  This is not one of those series you can jump in at any point.

Deborah Harkness writes with flourish, description and depth.  The All Souls Trilogy is a grown up Twilight with so much more story, character building and history.  It is apparent that Harkness is a historian herself.  While at times The Book of Life seemed to get bogged down in the development, the entire series is wrapped up nicely.  All in all I cannot think of a question that did not get answered by the turn of the final page, except for maybe ‘when do we get a new book from Deborah Harkness!’

The middle is more on the longer side while the ending could have been a bit longer – or maybe it was that I didn’t want to leave the characters behind!  If you’ve been reading the All Souls Trilogy series I can safely say you will thoroughly enjoy The Book of Life.  If you haven’t started on this series, why the heck not?!?

With a tremendous thanks to Viking Adult Publishing, I have a copy of The Book of Life + buttons/swag to give away to one lucky US reader.  Contest ends Sunday, July 20th at 11:59 pm.  Only US residents for this giveaway please.
